Unrestricted funds to support Fahe’s new housing challenge

Press Release | January 14, 2025

Berea, KENTUCKY, January 14, 2024–Fahe is proud to announce a transformative $12 million grant from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, awarded through the Yield Giving foundation. This flexible funding will empower Fahe and its network of over 50 nonprofit organizations to double production and expand access to affordable homes across Central Appalachia over the next five years.

“Scott’s grant is philanthropy done right,” said Fahe CEO Jim King. “The unrestricted nature of the funding demonstrates trust in our ability to allocate resources where they are needed most. This support, combined with impact investing from additional supporters, will be instrumental in advancing our five-year housing challenge.”

The challenge, aimed at addressing decades of housing deficits in Central Appalachia, seeks to construct or rehabilitate 60,000 homes and positively impact 1 million people in the region by 2030. Achieving this goal requires systems change through innovative strategies, strengthened capacity among nonprofit partners, and $3 billion in investment.

“Housing is a national priority,” King emphasized. “With these funds we will bolster innovative Member initiatives, leverage our balance sheet, and expand the capacity of our Network to scale solutions that work for Appalachia.”

Appalachia remains one of the most economically challenged regions in the United States. Fahe’s network, comprised of over 50 nonprofit organizations, delivers localized leadership and deep community insights, making them uniquely equipped to meet the region’s needs.

Fahe President Sara Morgan added, “We are deeply grateful for MacKenzie Scott’s trust and support. This grant will enable us to provide durable housing, promote economic mobility, and build resilient communities for low-income families.”
