Fahe in the News: Key Stories You Don’t Want to Miss
At Fahe, we are committed to raising awareness about the housing challenges facing Appalachia and the transformative work being done by our network. Recently, Fahe and our Members have been featured in major media outlets, highlighting both the struggles and the solutions shaping housing in our region. Here’s a roundup of the latest coverage:
Housing in Appalachia: Us & Them Podcast
On February 12, 2025, Fahe was featured in the latest episode of Us & Them, where Virginia resident Joyce Vest shared how, with the help of a friend and Fahe Member SERCAP, she was able to overcome barriers and remain in the place she calls home.
Fahe CEO Jim King sheds light on the broader housing crisis, explaining, “We have about 3.8 million households in Appalachia…. If your income is very low, your ability to find a decent place to live is very limited.” Meanwhile, Mel Jones, Research Scientist at the Virginia Center for Housing Research (VCHR), notes that “Housing insecurity is mostly rooted in generations of being left out.”

The New York Times: Rebuilding After Disaster
Fahe and our Members HOMES and HDA were featured in The New York Times article, “Kentucky’s Mountaintop Mines are Turned into Neighborhoods,” published on January 28, 2025. The story highlights our collaborative efforts to provide relief to flood-affected communities in Kentucky.
Our Programs team provided critical data, including the rapid response to a new initiative: “In January, a regional housing network called FAHE, in conjunction with the state, opened a program to match flood survivors and residents with a case manager. Within the first month, 99 people applied.”
