Mon Valley Habitat for Humanity – Mon County Habit for Humanity is extending its service area and changing its name to Mon Valley Habitat for Humanity.  The new service area will expand to include Preston and Marion County.

North Central West Virginia Community Action Association (NCWVCAA) –  NCWVCAA hosted an early Veteran’s Appreciation Day on November 2nd.  Along with showing their appreciation, they provided program information for Supportive Services for Veterans and Families, a program which assists homeless veterans.

Coalfield Development Corporation

Fahe Member Coalfield Development, the WV Community Development Hub, and The Alliance for the Economic Development for Southern West Virginia hosted the Power of Performance Awards which recognizes excellence in creating positive community change.

Religious Coalition for Community Renewal (RCCR) – RCCR hosted a volunteer home repair projected for an elderly Charleston resident and her two great-grandchildren.  The repairs include roofing, electrical work, plumbing and insulation.  RCCR is still accepting donations and volunteers.

Kentucky

Community Ventures (CV) – Community Venture has been named a finalist in the Communities Thrive Challenge sponsored by The Rockefeller Foundation and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.  Communities Thrive is focused on strengthening and growing community-driving approaches that expand economic opportunity for low-income and financially insecure people.

Housing Development Alliance (HDA) – HDA has completed a new home in only two months’ time for a local Hazard, KY family.  The home was built with the help of local volunteers and donors.  HDA hopes to get the family in their home in time for the holidays.

Virginia

HOPE, Inc.

HOPE is opening Southwest Virginia’s first pay-what-you-can restaurant in Wytheville, VA. Named The Open Door Café, this restaurant will provide food tokens or the option to work for one hour for those who can’t afford to pay for a meal.  These tokens will be provided through donations.  For those who can pay, there is a suggested meal price of $8.  The kitchen is led by Chef J. C. Botero.  There are plans in the work to open a for profit coffee hut with proceeds going to the café.

Alabama

Community Action Partnership of North Alabama (The Partnership)

The Partnership recently helped a Decatur resident save money and improve the quality of her home.  Work crews winterized the home of Ms. Tucker which will prevent the loss of heat in the home.  On average, weatherization improvements save homeowners $283 a year.

Tennessee

Appalachia Service Project (ASP)

The Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA) awarded ASP a $500,000 Challenge grant for the construction of a 200-bed dormitory and additional warehouse space.  The dormitory will house volunteer church groups from across the eastern United States.  A commercial kitchen is also part of the expansion as well as separate living space for families displaced during home replacements.
