I have to shamefully admit that when it comes to some sort of idea of a Christmas spirit, I have traditionally been the first to play the cynic card. I usually dispense with platitudes about how the holiday has just become some sort of monument to excess and consumerism. I put my Ebenezer Scrooge hat on and tell my friends and co-workers that “it’s not as good as it used to be. In my day, we really knew how to have real Christmas spirit.” I think many folks can relate. We are so incredibly bombarded now by hour after hour of holiday programming on television, entire radio stations switching to Christmas music, and a new awesome sale flyer in our email every 15 minutes that it can become very difficult to have a real genuine connection to what former President Calvin Coolidge identifies, “Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.”

However, since I have been here at Fahe, I find it harder and harder to be the cynic. I am truly fortunate to work alongside a group of folks all over Appalachia that truly exemplify President Coolidge’s ideal. Without fanfare or accolades our employees and members just roll up their sleeves and do the incredibly hard work of creating dynamic projects out of limited resources that serve the people of Appalachia.

Ultimately, the most humbling fact of all is just how many of you folks who read this blog, follow our Facebook page, Twitter feed or are subscribed to our YouTube channel have gotten involved over the past year. While my old cynical self might say that it is cheesy to say so, the simple fact is that you folks make it possible for us to make a real difference in the lives of thousands of Appalachian families each year. Even the hardest hearted among us would have a hard time staying cynical in the face of those results.
