The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) is designing its newest strategic plan to guide ARC investments in Appalachia for fiscal year 2016 through 2020. Each year ARC provides funding for several hundred projects in the region.
What’s important about this newest plan is the direction it’s taking in regards to economic diversity. Historically it has focused on industries such as mining, textiles, tobacco and timber. In an effort to bolster the economy in a more sustainable fashion, they are turning to industries such as renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, health care, tourism, and local food initiatives.
By turning to more local and sustainable industries, more jobs will be created and more wealth will stay in the region. ARC will be accepting input for the general public on these matters before the plan is finalized.
